Haha! I dug up the reference and I remember now. I looked for terms in various languages which meant something like ‘trader’ or ‘slightly dodgy dealer’ for Reckoner-equivalents. IIUC, the term in Russian is of highly disputable etymology, which is always the best kind of etymology for my purposes. I don’t put these things in as Easter eggs, though it’s fun when they come across that way, more as texture and the opportunity for speculative connection
I get obsessive about research :) A bonus point for anyone following the thread this far: Ottavio Bertoni in London is based on a RL Italian gangster operating in London at the time, Charles Santini I think
